What’s new and HOT for 2010

I can only wonder on how it can possibly be 2010 already. I am excited to be heading into our sixth year at the nursery. Here are some of the new things to look for and a mention of popular items we’re restocking.

Page’s Seeds 100% certified organic seed

We’ve ordered the smaller assortment of 28 different vegetables to start. Look for the ‘counter display’. This is in addition to our Cornucopia and Renee’s Garden line of seed.

L.E. Cooke’s berries and other edibles

This well be the first time ordering from Cooke because Dave Wilson, our main supplier of bare-root trees, does not stock berries. Look for strawberries, black raspberries, boysen and logan berries towards the end of January. They are also supplying us with artichokes, asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish. We should have seed potatoes again this year through our bulb company - Simple Pleasures.

Look for a larger selection of nut trees this year and we will have a few wine grapes along with our peaches, pears, apricots, nectarines, plums, persimmons, pomegranates, figs, apples and table grapes.

Going Native

I am hoping to expand our CA Native plant section. Look for redbud, western cottonwood and CA sycamore coming bare root and a wider choice of potted plants.

Roses

We have to order our bare root roses in bundles of 5, so every year it’s hard to chose which varieties we’ll be carrying. We have ordered the only AARS winner this year ‘Easy Does It’ and have re-ordered the favorites like Mister Lincoln, Double Delight, Rio Samba and Hot Cocoa. I like to get in varieties we do not carry every year. Some of those are Broadway, Love’s Promise, Voodoo, Heirloom and Paradise Found. Our 5 David Austin roses are all new to us. Please see our complete Rose list. You can go to www.starroses.com for pictures and descriptions.

Containers and pottery

We were offered a new pottery line at the L&L show in October and I am pleased to say we ordered the Primary Color pack along with the 3 shape variety pack from River Market Pottery, so look for some new things in the container line.

Rush Creek’s plastic line of containers always catches the eye and we will be stocking some of their line also.

We ordered from Pacific Home and Garden again so if you are in the market for heavy duty colorful pottery we will have it, along with their water bowls.

We finally saw the plastic lightweight faux rolled rim containers from Tusco. They have a very nice look to them. Made in the USA, these are as close to the real thing we have seen and we have been looking.

Bamboo Chimes

We restocked on the popular ‘Abby’ bird chime along with a few other styles. We like the dragon, but if you are a flamingo lover we have those too. ‘Abby’ now comes in a variety of colors.

General

Keep you eyes out for new items from our garden accessory suppliers. We’re jazzed about the vegetable garden plant markers, artsy trellis’, garden benches and message rocks to name a few.

New look!

We are re-arranging at the nursery, so don’t be surprised by the big changes you’ll be seeing in 2010. We’re sure it will be a work in progress for a couple of months. We hope you’ll like it and look forward to serving you in the coming year.
