Petite Licorice Plant
Always interesting to find a plant with two Latin names, as the rule is one Latin name accepted worldwide to avoid confusion around the globe. The 4-inch plants we are offering use the latter name but I found it in the past issue of Sunset Western Garden guide under Plecostachys. (No mention of it in the latest edition)
Petite Licorice Plant is much more cold hardy than its cousins and is good choice for a ground cover, edging border, or as rock garden selection. We like to use it in our hanging baskets and pots where it spills over and adds foliage color interest. It is grown for the foliage rather than its clusters of tiny pinkish white ‘flowers’.
Plecostachys takes half to full day sun, moderate water and is deer resistant. It is native to South Africa, so it is climate appropriate. The leaves are furry and appear grey, are quite small, but the plant can reach over a foot tall and twice as wide. It is rated to Sunset Zone 8, so treat as an annual, although a lot of you will see it recover for next year.

I am happy to say the Nursery has been hopping in May. As usual the vegetable sales have been brisk and I commend all of you who toil in the soil so you can savor your home-grown tomatoes, squash, peppers, and beans. I was able to break away on Memorial Day when we closed early to get my own tomatoes planted.
Earwigs are what’s eating big holes in your new vegetable and annual starts. They come out at night while you’re dreaming of pesto and cucumber salad and are a nightmare if not controlled. Thank God for Sluggo Plus! We sell it and know it works. We use it here.
Dave Wilson Nursery e-mailed me an interesting article on Peach Leaf Curl. This article stated that if Peach Leaf Curl is bad 3 years in a row, it can kill your tree. It went on to state that although in bad years you will always get some curl, copper sprays control 70% of what you could have had. For those of you who asked, I continue to say keep the tree as healthy as possible with extra food and regular water but I guess I have to say now that is is possible for Peach Leaf Curl to kill your tree.
Our roses all bloomed at once and are just finishing their first bloom. I am very pleased with how most of them grew out and it was a lovely site to behold. Many of you took the time to stroll through the roses while visiting the Nursery. We are going to continue to offer the Buy 3, get a 4th FREE on the roses. They do great in large containers on your deck away from the deer. Plant long blooming annuals or perennials around the base for color all season long.
Madam Galen Trumpet Vine
The Nursery is packed with great plants for Lake County. We have had some things in these past deliveries that were so nice, we sold out in just a few days time. Some of the plants you might have missed were Dwarf Pomegranate ‘Chico’, Red Bottlebrush, Yellow ‘Pomegranate’, and Lemon Queen Santolina. We are stocking up on Hibiscus and Crape Myrtles and just got in some nice 1 gal orange Madam Galen Trumpet Vines. The hostas are looking good as are the Hydrangeas. We even have a few of the modern ones that bloom on old and new wood – ‘Twist and Shout’ and ‘Endless Summer’. We have some 1 gal Hydrangea paniculata ‘Brussels Lace’ which is one of my favorites and takes less water than the H. macrophylla types. We just stocked olives and citrus.
We are keeping Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ and ‘Hot Lips’ on hand as much as possible. Some of our exciting colors of Echinacea are starting to bloom too, check out Berberis ‘Orange Rocket’. So come into Star Gardens, where there’s always something new or changing.
